Cerveza

By 1890, the first substantial industrial brewing facility - Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc - was built in Monterrey, Mexico. Today, Mexico is also the world’s third largest beer exporter, trailing only Holland and Germany.

Beer isn’t just limited to bottles and drafts. Beer cocktails are gaining popularity. The Michelada is a classic beer beverage.

MICHELADA

In Mexican Spanish slang, a CERVEZA is a “CHELA”. An ICED BEER is a “CHELA HELADA”. Ice is a very important ingredient of this cocktail in Mexico City. “Mi” is a possessive adjective meaning my. MICHELADA is all together, “MY FROZEN BEER”…MI CHELA HELADA!

What is it? Glass with salted rim:
Chile de Arbol powder, Worcestershire, lime, cracked black pepper, ice and a TECATE beer. $5

There is a lighter, often copied version…Chelada. Simply, a Dos equis Lager draft with fresh lime and salted rim, over ice. $4.50

Beer-rita - Tecate, Sauza tequila, splash orange liquor, lime, ice and salted rim…$6

There are other, lesser known Mexican brands that bring back memories.

I remember my Mother’s Carta Blanca in the fridge, for our family days at the beach. Ice cold Bohemia with grilled lobster in Puerto Nuevo…Sol, sittin’ on the beach in “Playa”, Quintana Roo.
